“Getting to do research at a facility I consider home feels fantastic. I met about a dozen animal care specialists who went to Eckerd College over the years, and my mom jokes that I chose my college when I was 8,” Hailey remembered. For my 12th birthday my mom brought me down to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, and I’ve been hooked ever since. Hailey’s glad to be a part of a project that puts her one step closer to her dream of becoming an animal trainer. Until then, Frick’s team will continue studying Rex and Rudy through the summer and will conclude this research project in two years, Frick explained. “Two of our bottlenose dolphins are also hard of hearing, so it would be wonderful if down the line we could do a study to find out how they sustained the hearing loss that made it impossible for them to survive in the wild.” “We have seven dolphins in total, two rough-toothed and five bottlenose,” Curry said. Two animals is a small sample size for a behavioral analysis such as this, both Frick and Curry explained, but because only two facilities in the country have access to rough-toothed dolphins, any new information gained from Rex and Rudy will deepen the knowledge of the entire scientific community. “It is showing us how they might be using touch to communicate.” They will use their two pectoral fins on the sides of their bodies to touch one another,” Frick said.

However the boat ride, the movie building, and the trolley ride were a nice surprise and helped make the trip worth it.Frick said her student team began monitoring Rex and Rudy in February and have already learned a little about the animals-who had been deemed unreleasable because hearing loss had halted their ability to echolocate, a skill dolphins use to communicate, hunt and stay with their pods. Then we could have seen things better and not felt quite so rushed to move on so other people could see. I think it would have been 10 times better if there were less people there (with the FTF rally we had over 100 people in our group on top of all the other people that were there). When it was all said and done I was a little disappointed with the Aquarium. They actually had the movie playing on a screen there and I think the kids would have sat there and watched the whole thing!Īfter that we took a trolley ride back to the aquarium and our car. The movie area was cool and the kids liked seeing all of the different items and scenes from the movie. It was really neat having the kids try to find Dolphins while we were on the boat!
#CLEARWATER MARINE AQUARIUM DOLPHINS DRIVER#
A few minutes in we started to spot Dolphins in the water! The driver would stop and we would watch them for a while.

We got on the boat (which was right outside the front of the aquarium) and headed out.

Luckily my parents were with us again so they were able to watch Knox while I went in with the other kids.Īfter that we had heard that they had a boat that took you out and over to the other part of the Aquarium which was all about the movies (props, pictures, movies, etc). It was interesting and informative but maybe a little to much for the younger kids. Through the FTF rally we were able to attend an education session where they talked about Sea Turtles. We checked that out and then watched the turtles and sea otters for a little bit. They had a couple of touch tanks – with sting rays and sea urchins. The kids thought it was neat and I am glad that we did it! It was really hard to tell what was going on but as we walked around we were able to see Winter. We decided to take the kids to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium since it is just down he street from the beach. To be honest I didn’t think it could hold the amount of people that were there. Clearwater Marine Aquariums most famous dolphins, Winter and Hope, were featured in the major motion pictures Dolphin Tale and Dolphin Tale 2 Palm Pavilion. Once you go in it really isn’t much of an Aquarium but more of an animal rescue set up. But when you get there they have the boat from the movie and the kids thought it was awesome to see. Connect with dolphins, snorkel with fish and rays, hand-feed exotic birds and enjoy. It was over an hour drive from the rally – and even more when you take a wrong exit – yes I did that. Winter's Dolphin Tale Adventure and Clearwater Marine Aquarium. I quickly got on the computer and made sure we could still get tickets!Īlso, be sure to check out our Florida Road Trip as this is a stop on the route! Then one of the Mom’s I met at TTO mentioned that it was Winter From Dolphin Tale! I said Wait WHAT?!! Now we have to go! The kids love the movies and watch them all the time. I figured we had been to enough Aquariums so we really didn’t need to spend the money on another one. At first we weren’t even going to attend the Clearwater Aquarium field trip at the FTF Rally.
